Tools Needed

Glass Surface Mount Deck Railing Installation

1. For 36” high railing trim all 34 1/4” deck posts requiring drop in top rail sleeves with mounts to overall height of 34” (including ¼” base plate).(IE. Corner posts, center posts with straight top sleeves etc.) For 42” railing trim all 40 ¼” deck posts requiring drop in top rail sleeves with mounts to overall height of 40” (including ¼” base plate) (IE. Corner posts, center posts with straight top sleeves etc)
NOTE: This step is critical in maintaining uniform rail height and adequate glass bite into upper glass insert, allowing for height differences on posts requiring top rail sleeves and posts attached to top rail using post mounts. Do NOT fasten top rail sleeve to post at this time.

2. Install post mounts (Part #1015040) to remaining posts (i.e. Center posts using #8 X ¾” stainless steel Tec screws). View Detail

3. Loosely position and layout posts with base plate over outer edge to determine post positioning and placement. Mark positioned post locations, measure distance between posts and cut bottom rail and lower glass insert to required length. Cut bottom rail shorter to allow for fillet weld clearance inside of bottom sleeve (Not applicable on post using bottom screw on sleeves –Part #080401*)
INSTALLATION TIP: Inserting glass insert material into bottom rail will enable both members of assembly to be cut at same time. NOTE: Posts spans may vary due to application methods and site conditions. Typical rail centerlines are 2 ½” from outer deck edge; however measurement may vary due to varying site conditions and substrate type. Concrete applications may require additional edge distance and specialty anchors. Consult your Deck Images ™ representative for additional information.

4. Insert 2 pieces of ½” X ½” X 4” black rubber glass setting block (Part #1014012) into open end of glass insert. Snap bottom rail center support leg (Part 100801*) into bottom rail, positioning mounting hole to deck interior. NOTE-Glass setting blocks and support legs MUST be inserted prior to installing bottom rail into adjoining posts enclosed bottom sleeves.

5. Starting at pre-determined starting point mount your first post. Upon mounting first post application method will involve inserting bottom rail assembly into lower enclosed bottom sleeve, followed by alternating between post installation to installing bottom rail assembly into enclosed bottom sleeve. Repeat process until post and bottom rail assembly installation is complete. Deck Images ™ recommends your begin initial post installation at top of any stair locations to insure proper transitional alignment at deck/stair junctions. Decks without stairs it is recommended you initiate post installation at either a corner location or end post location and work from left to right, using the installation method described above.

6. Loosely install all top rail sleeves with mounts into post tops, do NOT fasten top rail sleeves to post at this time.

7. Measure and cut top rail to fit. Remove loosely installed top rail sleeves with mounts to allow for top rail installation. INSTALLATION TIP: Miter cut top rail at corner sleeve locations to obtain maximum strength allowing ½” clearance for adjustment to plumb posts as required. Run top rail past any required end posts by a distance of 1 ½” to allow for end cap installation. Install any required end caps at end post locations and/or wall mounts at the appropriate location at this time.

8. Fasten top rail sleeves with mounts to posts using # 8 X ¾” 18-8 stainless steel Tec screws. Plumb posts and fasten top rail sleeves to top rail. To fasten top rail sleeves first pilot drill ¼” pass though hole in top rail sleeve and fasten using #12 X 1 ¾” 18-8 stainless steel screws. Plumb all remaining center posts and attach post mount to top rail using # 8 X ¾” stainless steel screws.

9. Glass insert can now be installed in the upper top rail profile. INSTALLATION TIP: Miter cut glass insert to allow for clearance at post mounts and insure esthetically pleasing finish.

10. Re-position the two 4” pieces of setting block inside lower glass insert. One 4” piece of setting block positioned in approximately 8” from each end of the opening.

11. Measure height between installed glass insert and add ¾” to opening to achieve required glass height. Measure rough opening width and deduct desired air gap along side of posts (Typically 3” per side -6” overall per opening). Provide FINISHED glass sizes at time of order. Include Height X Width X Thickness/ Specify clear or tinted glass/ Specify edge detail- Minimum edge (Standard) or polished edge (Specify locations).

12. Install glass, inserting into upper channel first and swinging glass over lower channel. Lower glass pushing into lower glass insert. INSTALLATION TIP: Glass can be adjusted for vertical plumb by removing glass and adjusting setting block location.

36 “ Glass Surface Mount Stair Railing Installation

1. Determine stair bottom and mid-post locations. (Refer to deck instructions if stair landing is present)

2. Cut bottom stair post to the desired height and angle. NOTE: Stair application requires field cutting of 40” (Surface mount) plain posts to suit field conditions. Ensure #8 center screw ports are running parallel to railing and stair stringers to allow for installation of stair mount plate.

3. Position and install bottom stair post. NOTE: Plumb installation of all stair posts is critical to insure proper installation of glass parallelograms into stair infill area.

4. Install stair mount plate to top of post using #8 X ¾” stainless steel Tec screws into mid point screw ports. Attach stair mount plate to top rail using # 12 X 1 ¾” stainless steel screws.

5. Install top rail into top stair post stair sleeve and extend top rail past bottom stair post the desired distance. NOTE: Consult your local building code authorities for local bylaws and code requirements.

6. Repeat steps 2-4 for mid posts installation.

7. Measure, cut and install bottom rail to posts using appropriate angle of universal up/down bottom stair sleeves. NOTE: Install glass insert and setting block prior to fastening bottom rail assembly between the posts. Bottom rail assembly to be installed parallel to top rail to maintain parallel opening. Setting block to run the entire length of bottom rail alternatively 4” must to be siliconed into place to prevent downward movement.

8. Measure glass stair openings for glass infill. Add ¾” to opening height for finished glass order size. Deduct required air gap between glass edge and post edge (Typically 3” per side -6” overall opening) NOTE: Deck Images ™ strongly recommends cardboard templates be provided at time of order.

9. Install glass insert into upper rail profile.

10. Install glass by inserting glass into upper channel, swing over lower bottom rail and lower into lower glass insert.
